Now, What's Wrong With a Peace Sign?

Malia's Peace Sign

It wasn't a Che Guevara t-shirt, after all. It wasn't Bob Marley smoking a joint. It wasn't "If you see the police, warn a brother" t-shirt. I once saw an even more offensive shirt: "No one cares about your blog." Now, the outrage over that, I could understand.

But a young girl wearing a peace-sign t-shirt?

What's wrong with that? She's a young girl who expresses the idealistic views of most teenagers. Even Republican children. No?

I'm trying to understand Republicans, I really do. I mean, even if we choose to fight every country in the world where Muslim extremists might be plotting attacks against the US, isn't Peace the result we hope for in the end? Hell, we even say we dropped the atomic bombs on Japan because we wanted to bring peace.

So what's wrong with this shirt?

Now, quotes from Free Republic members have been circulating the internet, so there's no reason to add them here. But if you want a taste of racism, click here for a screen shot of the first page of comments.

And here's a link to a story from the Vancouver Sun:

Don't try to understand Republicans. They're racist, homophobic religious nuts. Most of them are mentally ill and not worth bothering about.
Picking on a little girl for racist or any reason is unforgivable. I don't try to understand people like that.

The real republicans are not making fun of the young lady. It's the wacked out far right ones that are making the rest of them look bad.

No different than the progressive Citizen Shelly who demonstrates a level of prejudice common to the far left but not found too much in the more normal left leaning democrats.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with this shirt. The far right will go to any lengths to criticize. Would that they woould go to such lengths to do something positive. I am sick unto death of such racism.

Shelly, the Party has been hijacked in a bloodless revolution by extremists. "Most of them are mentally ill." Might have a point there... The word Extremists is not good enough to describe these people.

ChickenHammer, I think the problem with Republicans now is that they can't pick their fights. Sure, they could have valid points about the stimulus and about Afghanistan and about many other issues, but instead, the leaders are concerned with Wise Latinas and the insane followers concern themselves with t-shirts. And any time a Republican dares to challenge the extremists, he get attacked. Like Lindsey Graham got attacked for hinting he wouldn't oppose Sotomayor. Saying all that, I assume you distance yourself from the t-shirt attackers as you refer to yourself as a "real Republican." But you have a picture of Obama dressed as Hitler on your blog. What does that say on real Republicans?

Askcherlock, that's what I'm saying. Not even mentioning the racist comments against a child, you can wear a Peace t-shirt and still be a Republican. At least that should be the case. Instead we got to the place were peace-loving people aren't welcome in the Republican Party.

There's nothing really wrong with that.Duhhh.
React if she's wearing a shirt with weeds printed on it!
I guess it's just that they hate President Obama...his family and everyone who loves him!

Moongoddesslae, I'm trying to be fair to them as much as I can... I mean, hatred is a terrible thing, but I probably hated Bush as much as they hate Obama.

But it took me longer to reach that point. And my hatred never moved down to an 11-year-old girl.

And even if I say it is just hatred... still, what's wrong with a Peace sign? Don't Republicans want peace? Maybe they think I'm naive and that the only way to peace is through war, but still--isn't peace their end result? I'm really just trying to understand.
