About the Facebook Poll

As the news about the Facebook poll asking for opinions about the killing of the President quickly move from a single blog, The Political Carnival, to all news channels and blogs, it's interesting to see the reaction from the right.

On the one hand, major sites like Free Republic and FoxNews.com moderate their comments, and you can bet they've been working harder than usual to eliminate any hint of agreement with the poll.

So on Free Republic we get a mix of

Or, if is a real threat, then expect it from the 0bamacorns since they would benefit from decades of 0bama martrydom (40 years since MLK was assassinated -- and they are still using his martrydom for their own benefit).

And a little bit of

What do you all want to bet that this despicable poll was started by an Obamunist, possibly from the WH itself, to try to gin up a “Reichstag Fire” type of incident, enabling the Illegal Alien to establish complete totalitarian rule.

But no real drama there. Nothing out of the ordinary.

The Fox News website, however, had to provide the article without comments. At some point there were comments available, such as those calling for the assassination of Obama, Pelosi, and Biden, but seems like Fox News moderators got tired of filtering out those calling for political assassinations and decided to simply delete all comments.

Thus we were left with only the memory of (and no screen grab, I'm afraid):

well they need to do a 3 for one and get o-boy, pelosi and biden

So most major bloggers knew they were playing with fire here, and either put on their best face or completely ignored this item (Malkin, for one, going for the more important news about the guys who were kicked off a plane for Peeing while Middle-Eastern-Looking).

So you know that to get some good blogging about the Facebook poll one has to go to the real nuts.

Like Newsbleat.com:

For one, only the people who answered “yes” to this could be considered to be making a threat. The person asking the question can’t. For two, everyone involved, the one who posted this and those who responded, are all anonymous. So where is the actual threat?

I'm not sure I can follow that logic. Here's an insightful comment from GreenPassion.org, which isn't a political blog but a cannabis growing forum where Libertarians meet to discuss the spelling of the word President:

Minor note: You called him the "Precedent". Its "President".

And here's a part of the original post:

Is free speech gone in the US now?
I believe that Americans are feed up and very angry at the crap job he is doing, printing more funny money then any other Precedent in history and even the world!

By the way, Little Green Football proves again, with this short post, that there are sane Republicans out there:

Bad, bad craziness is coming out into the open more and more, encouraged by GOP politicians and right wing radio hosts, pandering to and inflaming the most extreme elements.

Damn, LGF... I guess someone isn't getting a free audio version of Palin's new book.

But let me declare tonight's winner, The Angry Hipster. In "Who shouldn’t be killed?" he writes:

So the FBI or secret service or whatever are investigating who put up a poll for assassinating Obama. Facebook is cooperating and handing over all their files like scared little whores. Everyone is all afraid their info will be given out and blah blah blah.

Let me point out a bunch of shit that pisses me off about it.

First thing, who fucking cares if someone polls if Obama should get wacked? Why is he more important that George Clooney? Why can’t we poll if he’s gonna get thrown in a cement bucket and tossed off a bridge? It’s kinda funny to think about. . . . Fuck assassination polls, if you wanna wack someone, just do it. Least that way they don’t see it coming and they probably deserved it in some way.

And why does Obama deserve it? Because he now wants to shorten summer vacation. But not to compete with the rest of the world. Oh no. The man is sinister!

He wants to send our kids to school LONGER to have a better chance of systematically assimilating them to become socialites.

What can I say? The man just says what we all think. Keep speaking truth to power, Dude!

Anonymous, wow. Thanks. That's cool. Tell you the truth, for a second I thought I was imagining it. It's funny that they simply got tired of moderating insane comments and just took them all down.

Jolly, let me be the first to congratulate you on reaching the end of that sentence without your head exploding from the contradictions. I wear a neck brace when I go on these sites. Just in case I bang my head on the keyboard.

Well, while I never would have put up such a poll, the fact of the matter is that it is a question - it is not a threat. Even if they find out who actually posted the question, the First Amendment allows it. Since this was not a direct threat to the President and it wasn't inciting, enticing, or encouraging a threat to the President, there isn't any way they can legally prosecute the idiot who posted this question.

While I personally disagree with this President due to his whacked out policies, I feel it is highly inappropriate to even consider discussing the assassination of ANY President regardless of who is in the WH.

Bobo, it's just a question. But so is, "Do you think Bush should be shot next time he's in a public place, for all the pain he's caused?" It was, as you say, encouraging a threat to the President, so it's beyond the 1st Amendment.

They actually now found out who it was, and it was just some kid, so it's not a big deal. They didn't charge him. But even for a kid, something like that didn't occur to him in a dream. The idea that an evil usurper rules this country as part of a conspiracy is becoming a basis for right-wing thinking and actions.
